At Sheridan Hearing Service, we’re always happy to answer your questions about hearing loss and hearing devices. If you’re looking for answers to a specific question, check out our FAQ below. We’ve put together a list of the most commonly-asked questions that we receive at our Mississauga and North York hearing clinics. If you have any questions that are not covered here, please contact us.

My hearing device has stopped working. What should I do?

If your aid has stopped functioning try the following:

  • Check the volume control; make sure that the volume is turned on.
  • Clean your device. Sometimes, the device can become plugged with earwax; gently remove the wax or replace your wax filter.
  • Change the battery.

If you’re still experiencing problems, call Sheridan Hearing Service to make an appointment.

How long will my hearing device last?

Hearing devices typically last between three and five years.

Should I sleep with my hearing device in?

Never wear your hearing device to bed. Always remove your aid and keep the battery door open to conserve battery power.

I wear glasses. Can I use a behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing device?

Yes. However, do take care when removing your glasses. Remove your spectacles by holding the frames on both sides and move gently forward. Avoid removing them in a fast or jerking fashion as this can dislodge your BTE aid.

Can I wear my hearing aid when I shower?

It is not recommended to wear your hearing aids while showering, bathing or swimming.

Why is my hearing aid beeping?

Your device is programmed to emit sounds to alert you for a number reasons including low battery, as well as volume and program changes. Your user guide should contain detailed information on alerts.

How often do I need to change the wax filter?

This depends on how much wax you produce. Some people need to change their filter as often as once a week, while others can go as long as months without needing a change. The rule of thumb is that when wax or debris is apparent, you should change the filter.

Give us a call if you have additional questions or you’d like to make an appointment at our Mississauga or North York location. We’re here to help you.
